Organic for Our Planet
History of Lawn Chemicals:
The use of lawn chemicals was developed based on an industry need, not the desire for a better planet.
Nitrogen fertilizer was a direct product of War. The process to make Nitrogen fertilizer was originally used to make ammunition for the World Wars. At the end of the war, large companies had been built upon the need for nitrogen and now had huge supply with no demand. So they created a demand-the green lawn. The first color televised PGA tournament brought on a huge demand for “green grass”.
Usage of Lawn Chemicals:
-
Natural gas accounts for 80-90% of the cost of fertilizer production
-
One 40 pound bag of fertilizer uses the equivalent of 3 gallons of gas for the manufacturing, shipping, and application.
-
Homeowners use up to 10% more chemical pesticides per acre on their lawn than farmers use on crops every year.
-
Only 30% of synthetic fertilizers are usable by the target plant. The other 70% leaches into our waterways and the air.
Environmental Effects of Lawn Chemicals:
-
Hypoxia/Eutrophication: Algae blooms, caused by the run-off of synthetic fertilizers, are causing dead zones in estuarys (where fresh and salt water meet). These algae blooms grow intensely due to the constant nitrogen feed. But their overwhelming presence uses up all the oxygen, killing plant and animal life in these areas.
-
Studies have shown that the massive decrease in bee pollination is directly related to chemical pesiticides used in traditional agricultural and lawn care. “With 1-in-3 bites of food dependent upon pollination, the stakes couldn’t be higher”
-
”Studies of major rivers and streams find that 90% of fish, 100% of surface water samples, and 33% of major aquifers contain one or more pesticides at detectable levels”
Organic for Our Lawns
What Do Plants Need?
Air. Water. Food. A person can live approximately 30 days without food, 3 days without water and 3 minutes without air. Take any one of those away and the person dies. Plants have the same three fundamental needs. All are necessary for survival. The more balanced the amounts of each, the better the plant-50% air, 30% water, 20% sun and nutrition (approximate values).
Chemical lawn care takes all three of these away:
-
Chemicals kill soil biology
-
No soil biology results in compacted soil, limiting natural air, water and nutrients to the plant
-
The unbalanced feeding of huge amounts of nitrogen causes the blade to push up without having a strong root system to support it. This leaves the plant weak and susceptible to disease. Not only does this increase the need for water but it diminishes the plants ability to get water because of the small root zone.
The result—a lawn that needs increasing amounts of synthetic fertilizer, pesticides and WATER!
Why Whole Yards BeeSafe Product?
Traditional Organic Lawn Care:
-
Uses biosolids as a nitrogen source which has high salts (killing soil biology) and pathogen risks
-
Is not water soluble; It needs soil biology to break it down and make available to plants, but its nitrogen source kills soil biology, rendering the applications unusable
-
Does nothing to increase soil biology
-
Results in not enough nutrients and still compacted soil, leaving plants weak and susceptible to weeds, pests and disease
Whole Yards Organic Lawn care:
-
Focuses on adding and feeding soil biology, which increases air and water
-
Uses plant sources for nutrition (completely safe and highly effective)
-
Uses balanced nutrition (macro and micro nutrients, not just Nitrogen!)
-
Practices proper application: fertilizes at optimal times (not in the heat of summer); summer applications focus on soil conditioning
-
Uses liquid applications (not granular) which are quickly available to plants
Whole Yards Results:
-
Potential savings of 40% less water
-
Less mowing required
-
Stronger plants to survive drought and stress
-
Prevention of weeds, pests and disease
-
No negative run off

Organic for Our Families
Dangerous Lawns:
In the past 20 years, there has been an increased awareness concerning the health hazards of everyday lawn chemicals. These are chemicals used by professional lawn companies as well as those used by homeowners purchased through home improvement stores.
Just a few of the scary facts surrounding lawn chemicals:
-
Children are 6.5 times more likely to get leukemia in lawns where chemicals have been applied
-
Lawn technicians are 3 times more likely to get prostate cancer from spraying lawn chemicals
-
Dogs are 2 times more likely to get lymphoma in a chemically treated lawn
-
The most widely used broadleaf weed killer, 2,4-D was the key ingredient in Agent Orange (the chemical warfare in Vietnam responsible for over 400,000 deaths and maimings and over 500,000 children born with birth defects).
